Black & Gold Marble Cake

Skill required: Confident baker 3 tablespoons hot water
2 tablespoons sugar
2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
3/4 teaspoon soda
2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 2/3 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter at room temperature
3//4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 eggs1. Stir hot water and 2 tablespoons sugar into the melted chocolate until smooth.
2. Then add 1/4 teaspoon soda and blend well.
3. Measure sifted flour, baking powder, salt, 1/2 teaspoon soda, and 1 2/3 cups sugar into sifter.
4. Stir butter just to soften.
5. Sift in flour mixture.
6. Add buttermilk and vanilla; mix until allflour is dampened. Then beat 2 minutes at medium speed of electric mixer.
7. Add eggs; beat 1 minute longer in mixer.
8. Pour half of batter into a bowl, add chocolate mixture nd blend well.
9. Grease and flour bottoms and sides of two 9-inch layer pans.
10.Put large spoonfuls of batter into pans, alternating mixtures.
11.Using a knife, cut through batter once in a wide zigzg course to marble.
12.Bake at 350 degrees 30 - 35 minutes.
